The Story

Ki's was  started as a simple idea in a small converted beauty shop in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. In 1980 Catherine "Ki†Holcomb partnered with her son, Barry, to provide the local community fresh juice and vitimins.  Shortly after,  Ki started cooking  home style  meals prepared in a healthful manner . The meals were a hit and the popularity of Ki's grew steadily.

In 1994, to facilitate ever-growing popularity, Ki's moved from its original location to a two-story, ocean view home on South Coast Highway 101 where it resides today. From the Coast Highway location, Ki's has expanded by adding  wholesale and catering businesses. Ki's salads, dressings, salsas and baked goods, have become popular throughout Southern California, and the catering business has provided great food for family, social and business events in the local communities since 1997.

Ki's has been privately owned by the Holcomb family since its inception. Besides continuing to grow the business and foster customer loyalty, the Holcomb family has looked to enrich the community by providing nutritious, great tasting food. Hopefully you will enjoy the Ki's experience with your friends and family in the years to come!

Ki's favors organic options for most of its food selections. Ki's also purchases grower direct for its fruit and vegetables and has other direct relationships for its meat and fish.

School Events & School Lunches

Ki's actively partakes in supporting local schools. Besides contributing to school events, Ki's donates services and hosts occasional fund-raisers. Food donations are also part of its assistance program.

Environmental Awareness - Green Living

Ki's approaches business with awareness of the environment. It recycles as much as possible. Ki's ongoing plan is to regularly integrate environmentally friendly actions into its day-to-day business. Long ago (well at least over a decade ago) Ki's became a pioneering user of the now
pervasive biodegradable brown napkin. These days, Ki's is moving toward containers that can be composted.

During the recent restaurant remodeling, Ki's focused on natural and sustainable materials. Please enjoy the eco-friendly hickory floor in the dining room, the glass mosaic made from recycled bottle glass behind the order counter and along side the upstairs bar, and the multi- colored slate covering the entire downstairs. The purple clay plaster featured in the entry way is also a natural product, deriving its color from natural earth pigmentation.

Ki's also supports local organizations that promote environmental awareness such as the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy.

Ki's Customers

Part of the experience of being at the restaurant is seeing the assortment of people who come to enjoy the food and view. It is typically a wide cast of characters. People coming from a workout, those dressed for work, people in the latest fashion and those entirely of their own fashion all mix to make Ki's an interesting and unique place. All, however, are share an appreciation for fresh, healthy and nutritious food served in the casual setting of the restaurant.

Ki's Staff

It is important to Ki's staff that customers have a great experience. Ki's staff focuses on friendly, courteous service. But if you're unreasonable with your requests or generally a P.I.T.A., please don't expect Ki's staff to be phony and treat you like royalty. Maybe you can find that at a more uptight establishment.

Rebecca came to Ki's in October of 1999 from New Jersey. She started as a juice maker but nine months later was running the counter operations. She has been a key part in the restaurant's steady growth and success during the past seven years.

Rebecca has recently been married and celebrated with a lively affair at Ki's Restaurant. She has fun with Ki's customers as well as the people she works with. Rebecca also admits, "It's nice to look across at the ocean everyday."

Being part of the Holcomb family, Nikki has worked at Ki's since she was a small girl. Rumor has it that she used to help out making smoothies before she could see over the counter. Years later she has worked the full gamut of food service positions and now heads the catering and dinner business.

She recently received her MBA from SDSU and has degrees from UCI in biological sciences and sociology. Nikki has a great 'can-do' attitude and entrepreneurial spirit.

Kris has been with Ki's since the start. In fact, she helped with construction on the original location. Since the early days of pounding nails, she has cooked, waited tables and been the 'juice bartender.' In addition, Kris has had a key role in building different parts of the business. In developing the wholesale program, she has developed products, food recipes, overseeing food production and building a customer base. Some of those same talents are now being utilized for the school lunch program.

She loves working locally in Cardiff, where she has lived for eighteen years with her husband and two children. She thinks working with the family is pretty cool too. Oh, and she is proudly known as "Nikki's Mom."

Ki's Space

Ki's space features a wonderful ocean view, a great vantage point from which to enjoy the changing colors of sea and sky. Our downstairs is casual, a perfect place to enjoy a quick bite. Our upstairs features both indoor and outdoor seating. Our patio is a favorite, covered but still connected to the elements outside. The indoor dining room has a warm and casual feel. It was recently renovated with beautiful hand-scraped hickory wood featured on the floor and artistic faux finished walls in golden tones.

A native San Diegan, Pecoff received his formal training at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He soon realized that his real classroom was the world around him. "When I was a child, my father traveled to remote places across the globe, searching for rare plants,†Pecoff reminisces, "His stories of those experiences were enchanting to me. He taught us to notice life around us and to express our feelings. It encouraged the development of my playfulness and imagination.†Pecoff has dedicated himself to traveling the world and finding the limitless inspiration everywhere.

At the heart of Grant Pecoff's talent is his ability to share the way he sees life with the viewer. His art calls us in and shows us a new way to experience what we see. Through Pecoff's painting, he communicates the essence of a culture and helps us to feel the commonality we all share. Perhaps it is this expression of our universal similarity and one-ness which have created such enthusiasm from collectors near and far for Pecoff's paintings. As his work evolves, it is certain to continue to speak to us, to shape us and to influence the way we see our world.

Charlene's background includes fashion design, interior design, model design, landscape design and decorating. She holds a masters in spatial art, studying in both New York and Europe. Charlene has been painting professionally for more than fifteen years.

Her works are beautiful depictions of nature - the coast, the desert and the canyons of the Southwest US as well as different tropical locales. As a known colorist, she utilizes bold color to evoke intense emotion. Charlene's paintings are designed to enhance one's home decor. Her work is available as originals or in giclee prints.

Wendy received her degree in art from Scripps College in Claremont, CA. Since then, she has accomplished much in the field. Her specialties include painting, sculpting and pastels. Wendy has also worked in commercial art for ten years and has been an art director and graphic designer. Some of her adventures include studying in Athens, Greece and working as an artist on an archeological dig.

Wendy has won several awards, including The Don Diego for "Best Three-Dimensional of Show†for her bronze sculpture, Rebirth, as well as the San Diego award for her popular painting Smiling Dogs (from Dog Beach in Del Mar). Most recently she won 1st place at the Del Mar Fair for her new painting Orchid Chorus.

Wendy has discovered a new passion in plein-aire painting with oils. Some of her art is shown at Ki's Restaurant. Much of her work is available as giclee prints with some originals. Wendy can also do commissioned work for those who appreciate her love of intense color and graceful shapes.

Take Interstate 5 to Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Proceed WEST for 1.5 miles. Turn right and head NORTH on Coast Highway 101 for 2.0 miles. Ki's is on right hand side

From Oceanside/Carlsbad:

Take Interstate 5 to Birmingham Drive. Proceed WEST for 0.5 miles. Turn left on San Elijo Ave and proceed 0.25 miles to Chesterfield. Turn right, cross the railroad tracks and turn left on Coast Highway 101. Proceed 0.5 miles to Ki's on the left hand side of the highway. PLEASE proceed past the restaurant to the next light to make the allowed U-turn to best access the restaurant.

Parking

During peak times, Ki's main lot and auxiliary parking lot can fill up. As consideration to other Ki's customers, please use these lots only when patronizing the restaurant. Those leaving their vehicles and going elsewhere are subject to tow. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

To encourage parking availability we will provide a complimentary drink (coffee, tea, soda or small o.j.) to the driver of a carpool of three people or more during lunch hours (Monday - Friday, 11am - 2pm).

Corporate Lunches

Please note:

  • A 20% non-refundable deposit is required with all catering orders.

What dates can I book Ki's Catering?
Ki's Catering can be booked year round. However, dates and times sometimes book well in advance, summer days for weddings and December nights for holiday parties for example. To check your date call (760) 436-5544 or email us at info@kiscatering.com.

How is Ki's pricing?
Very reasonable. In fact, many customers are absolutely thrilled with the pricing when tasting the quality of the food and experiencing the staff support.

Is it necessary to set up an in person meeting to plan my event?
No. In fact, Ki's Catering can help you save time. Many customers have enjoyed tremendously successful events simply with a phone call or email communication. Ki's can even help facilitate party rental items - tables, chairs, linens, silverware, stemware and such.

Can I customize a menu?
Absolutely. Ki's has ready-to-go menus (event catering and corporate catering), but these do not limit what food you can have at your event.

Can Ki's provide a bartender and alcohol?
Yes to both. However, for offsite parties, we recommend that you provide your own alcohol and we provide the bartender. This typically saves you money.

Can I arrange a food tasting prior to my event?
Yes. Specifics of the same need to be arranged with the Catering Manager. The details of your tasting will vary depending upon the type of event you are booking.

If I have to cancel my event, is the deposit refundable?
Unfortunately the 20% deposit is non- refundable. However, it can be applied in full toward a future catering job provided by Ki's.

What times are available to have party at Ki's Restaurant?
Generally speaking, summer dates are unavailable to book the restaurant. You will need to contact Ki's Catering to check date and time availability. Please call (760) 436-5544 or email us at info@kiscatering.com. For alternative venues, please click on Suggested Venues.

For parties at Ki's Restaurant, can we bring our own alcohol or stay longer than our booked time?
Your may bring only your own wine, but a $9 corkage fee does apply. As for extending the duration of your party, a $100 per hour charge is billed.

For parties at Ki's Restaurant, what is included?
We provide table linens, flowers and greenery, silverware, glassware and real dishes. No up-charge is billed for these.
